History

History of Morton Baptist Church

1939 - Present

Morton Baptist Church was started by way of a strong desire and vision of Ms. Amanda Jones in 1939. God gave Ms. Jones a desire to start a Baptist Church in the community. On August 13, 1939, Morton Baptist Church was organized and founded with 10 charter members. They met in the old school building, located where we are today. Morton called Bro. L.C. Kaufman to be the first Pastor.

God was at work! People were getting saved and baptized, and Morton was growing. Records show 28 new members joined through 1940 and 1945.  When the Lord was ready for the church to have a new building, He sent Bro. Merrell Brooks. He worked hard, and the Lord was with Him. Records show that the old school building and land was purchased in 1948 from Morton Smith for $300.

As time went on, God continued to work in and through Morton Baptist. On June 28, 1953, there was a dedication service. The purpose was to dedicate the church, educational building and the former parsonage. The church added a Sunday School room and kitchen to the “original” building in 1958.

In 1972, the church nominated a building committee and the prayer and planning of a new church building was established. On July 8, 1973, the church voted to pay $43,420 to build the new church, the one that we are still in today. November 18, 1973 was the first Sunday in our new church. In January 1974, Morton sold the “old school house” to Jack and Pearl Wright and Mr. Aubrey Jones. Pieces of the building can still be located around Morton to this day. In 1981, Morton built the parsonage that we still use today. The church made another addition in 2008. This included the gym, commercial kitchen, nursery, and upstairs classrooms. Today, this new addition is used for MBCKids, ROUTE56 and our THRIVE Student Ministry.

From 1939 to present day, Morton Baptist Church has been the entity of reaching the lost and growing God’s Kingdom. Morton Baptist Church has enjoyed the ministry of eighteen Pastors. These men have led Morton Baptist Church to know Christ and make Him known around the world and in our community. We are reminded of what Our Lord, Jesus Christ, has brought us through and what only He will continue to do in the life of our church. May we continue to love and serve The Lord forevermore.
